Bananas are loaded with antioxidants, fiber, potassium and vitamin B6, and are a good source of energy for both endurance and recreational athletes, according to a study by scientists in the Appalachian State University's Human Performance Lab. In the study, trained cyclists consumed either a cup of carbohydrate drink or half a banana every 15 minutes during two 2.5 to three-hour 75-kilometer simulated road races. Blood samples were taken before and after the exercise and analyzed for more than 100 metabolites. Bananas were a healthier source of carbohydrates and other nutrients than sports drinks.
